Album Review: Nicki Minaj's bumpy ride to 'Queen'

Image
Finally, she dropped something. This album has been a long time coming. I personally dubbed Nicki as "scared" after delaying the project despite making barbie promises. I wasn't wrong. See, The Pinkprint , her last studio album, dropped in 2014. As per tradition of the pre-streaming era, artists release new joints two years after the last one(obviously to make their fans miss them; give them enough time to digest full length projects cos albums then were actually 'full'; and have more time to rest and cook good sh*t.) This puts Nicki's The Pinkprint follow-up to hit the charts in 2016. But it didn't. Artists were in rare cases pardoned and given an additional 12 months to get their sh*t together – literally and figuratively. But credence testing incidents occurred. 2015 was the year streaming took flight. Artists such as Taylor Swift, Pink, Katy Perry, Jason Derulo , Carly Rae Jepsen , Lorde and others dominated the pre-streaming era. But...

Song Of The Moment

Image
I don't know why I felt writing the shortest review on an old song, that I feel many haven't heard, is worth a blog post. But it's my blog right? I can do whatever I want with it. LOL ... settled. Shawn Mendes - Youth (feat Khalid) If you're a fan of either of these lads – which is really hard not to be – you should listen to this song . It's more of a Khalid song than a Mendes song because it's hard to call it a duet when it is just two male voices on it but it really becomes a duet if you attentively  listen as these 20 year olds strike the chords of their voices beyond beat and genre. Khalid could double as TY Dolla Sign and John Legend on any track and he does this here and still makes way for the indelible Shawn Mendes — who isn't a Justin Bieber as much as you haters would want — to flex on his maturity. The unconventional theme makes this song a never-tiring ballad. So please, let me write whatever I wanna write about this song because "you...

Blocboy JB: 'Look Alive' Is Actually A Drake Song

Image
Officially, 'Look Alive,' which peaked at number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts and catapulted Memphis youngster, Blocboy(real name James Baker) into mainstream fame is billed as BLOCBOY JB FT. DRAKE. As an ardent Drake fan, I've always found that quite confusing and wanted to talk about the possible expurgation but I've been roped around the success of God's Plan, its follow-up 'Nice For What' and the all-round goodness of the song in question. Until now. After reading Victor Luckerson's article on The Ringer about the unstoppable dominance of Aubrey 'Drake' Graham in the music industry... It's a laudable piece(I'm recommending). You can read the full article here. https://www.theringer.com/music/2018/4/13/17232272/drake-nice-for-what-guest-appearances A particular paragraph broke my camel's back: "Drake’s chart dominance alone is not grounds for antitrust enforcement." He wrote. "However, the...

Cardi B - 'Invasion Of Privacy' Album Review

Image
"They say by now that I'll be finished, hard to tell ( I can tell). My little fifteen minutes last long as hell." Those words summarize Cardi's debut album, which is by all means one of the strongest debut I've ever listened to. Cardi B was almost a one hit wonder. A lot of people got tired of listening to 'Bodak Yellow'... Me, I didn't even like it to begin with. After an impressive follow-up single and a phenomenal guest verse on a multiple Grammy award winning artist's song, Cardi hurl out the one thing haters thought would be far fetched - A full length album(actually it's just 13 songs but it's as full as hell and conveniently satisfying). In spite of the fact that the word " p***y" is the most mentioned word on the album( "h*e" is probably the second most mentioned), it is for everybody. Cardi and her team combine self absorbing lyrics with mouth watering samples... and, oh yes, the appropriate ( for ...

'The Weeknd - My Dear Melancholy,' Album Review

Image
When you hear a big RnB artist has put out a six track – no vocal feature album– the first thing that comes to your mind is 'they are remnants and leftovers of a previous or an upcoming album' or 'he's releasing this to get hype us up for his new album.' But 'My Dear Melancholy,' (yes, there's an actual comma in the album title) doesn't sound that way. Either this is a full project to The Weeknd or his production team is just an awesome lot. Fresh out of a relationship with Selena Gomez, The Weeknd recruits Frank Dukes to executive produce alongside him. Although the songs are chapters of the same 'I just got out of a Break-Up' book, each song got it's own distinctive feel. 'Call Out my Name' and 'Try Me' are definitive standalone hit tracks. In the former, The Weeknd gives his best vocally and delivers the album's most talked about line: "I almost cut a piece of my self for your life."  For thos...
